At Golgotha, the Roman soldiers nailed Him to the cross. One of the first things He said, referring to the soldiers, was, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). The soldiers were merely doing their job and didn’t realize they had crucified the Son of God. Next, Jesus looked upon his mother Mary with love and said, referring to John who was with her, “Woman, behold thy son”. Then, to John, he said, “Behold thy mother” (John 19:26-27). By saying that, Jesus was entrusting the care of his mother to John the beloved. Jesus then said, “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 22:46). Then, His final exhausted yet triumphant words of crucifixion were, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

The greatest and most far reaching act in the history of mankind was now finished. This act transcended all events the history of the world. By this act, all mankind will be resurrected and receive immortality after this life. By this act, all mankind has the opportunity to repent and live with God again for all eternity. By this act, Jesus took upon Him our sins, our sorrows, our pains and our sicknesses. As Jesus said, “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laiden and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and the culmination of His life with the crucifixion were the most monumental events in the history of the world. If we simply believe in Him and His sacrifice and repent of our sins, we can find rest. We can return to live with God in celestial glory.
