It is important to note that Jesus didn’t call great religious leaders with fame and stature to be His apostles. He called humble fishermen who were hardworking and willing to learn. That is an example to all of us. In life, we shouldn’t aim for fame or power; we should be industrious, hard working and willing to follow and serve God and Jesus Christ. We also learn that the fishermen didn’t aspire to become apostles, but that Jesus instead chose them. The Savior said in John 15:16, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit”. From that, we learn that if God calls someone to a position, it is not for recognition or power, but the person is called to “bring forth fruit” – in other words to do good works or perform service for others.
