Bible Video: Parable of the Sower
Scripture: Matthew 13:1-20
Jesus started teaching in parables as seen in this Bible video clip about Jesus. His first parable was the Parable of the Sower. A sower is a person who sows or plants seeds. Some have said that this parable could be called the parable of the soil, because the soil represents the condition of our hearts when we hear the gospel. In other words, when we hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, are we ready to live it, do we reject it or do we accept it and later become ashamed and fall away?

Here’s what happened in the parable. 1. Jesus talked about “some seeds [that] fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up”. 2. “Some [seeds] fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth.” Those seeds grew and then were scorched in the sun and died because the roots couldn’t grow deep. 3. “Some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them.” 4. “But others fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.” (See the interpretation below.) Here’s the interpretation, as given by Jesus, in Matthew 13:19-23. The people in 1. (see above), are those who hear the word of God but don’t understand it. They are like the seeds on the wayside that were eaten by the birds. 2. The stony ground represents the people who hear the gospel and receive it and endure for a while, but when hardship or challenges come, they become offended and fall away from the Gospel. 3. The seeds that fall in thorns represent those people who hear the word of God, but are too caught up in riches and making money that the word of God is choked and dies. Finally, 4. The good ground (or soil) represents the people who hear the word of God, understand it and begin to do good works and serve others. They bring forth fruit (good works) at different levels, some 100 times, some 50 times and some 30 times. Now, the question is, when you hear the word of God, which kind of soil will you be?
