Bible Video: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Scripture: Matthew 26:36-57John 17:1-5

In this Bible video, we see His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane as He atoned for the sins of the world. This act was completed as He died on the cross for all mankind. After the intercessory prayer, Jesus took Peter, James and John and went a distance from the other apostles. Jesus, feeling the heavy weight of the situation, said, “my soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death” (Matthew 26:38). Jesus had known what He would have to go through as He suffered for the sins of all the world. However, now that we was actually in the situation, it appears that the heaviness and intensity of the setting, seems to have surprised even Him.

More About this Video:

Jesus then left Peter, James and John and told them to stay where they were and watch with Him. He then entered the garden and began to pray. Agonizing under the magnitude of the situation, Jesus asked the Father, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39). Then He returned and found Peter, James and John sleeping. He gave them a gentle rebuke, “could ye not watch with me one hour?” He then encouraged them to pray and showed some empathy as he said, “the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). As Jesus returned to pray, He said, “O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done” (Matthew 26:42).

So great was the suffering of Jesus that blood came from every pore (Luke 22:44Mosiah 3:7). As He was taking upon Him the sins, pains and sicknesses of the world (Matthew 8:17), an angel came to comfort Him (Luke 22:43). We will never know the extent of the suffering of Jesus as he took the sins and pains of the whole world upon Himself. All we can do is stand in awe of His divine sacrifice, repent of our sins and believe in Him so that His sacrifice will not have been in vain.
