As was standard protocol among the Jews in a synagogue, only a scripture and nothing else could be shared when one was standing in front of a congregation. Then, after returning to sit down, one could explain or expound on the scripture. The scripture that Jesus quoted in Isaiah was known by the Jews as referring to the Messiah and what He would do. Then, when Jesus sat down, he said, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”, or in other words – I am the Messiah that is spoken of by this scripture.

After Jesus inferred that He was the Messiah, many of the congregation didn’t believe He was the Messiah and said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”. Then, Jesus declared the well-known and oft-repeated phrase, “No prophet is accepted in his own country”. Next, Jesus told them that even Naaman the Syrian was better than them. After this comment, the people became incensed and took him to the top of a hill to throw Him to His death. But, by the power of God that was in Him, the people were powerless as He went through the group and departed. This passage is an amazing example of the power of Jesus as the Son of God.
