Bible Video: The Lord's Prayer
Scripture: Matthew 6:1-13
One of the reasons Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer is so we could have an example of how to pray. Before giving us the prayer, as you’ll see in the video, Jesus gave us two important teachings about prayer. The first was that we shouldn’t pray to be seen of others (Matthew 6:5-6); we should pray to communicate with God and express our thankfulness and needs. Next, Jesus taught that we should not use “vain repetitions” (Matthew 6:7). Prayers should be heartfelt like a child speaks with his or her parent.

Now, we’ll look at the meaning of the first part of the Lord’s prayer. To begin, Jesus said, “Our Father which art in heaven.” He acknowledges God as His and our Father who lives in heaven. Next, He says, “hallowed be thy name”. By this, Jesus recognizes the holiness of God and the respect we should have for Him. Next, He says, “Thy kingdom come”, or in other words, the kingdom of God will come forth on the earth, and after this life we will also come to the kingdom of heaven if we try our best to live a good life and believe in Jesus. The following phrase is, “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven”. In other words, we should not counsel God, or tell Him what to do, but we should find out what His will is and try to do it. Next He says, “Give us this day our daily bread”. We should ask God for the things we need. However, when we receive them, we should always remember to have a thankful heart for the things we receive. “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”. This means we must always remember to forgive others so God will forgive us. We need to give others the benefit of the doubt and show kindness when others offend us. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from sin.” We must watch and pray daily that we can be strong enough to avoid sin. Avoiding sin is a major key to finding peace in this life and eternal reward. “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen”. We need to acknowledge that we depend on God and that He knows all things and has all power forever. Finally, the word “amen” is an expression of agreement.
When Jesus was in Jerusalem, he gave the Lord’s Prayer as part of the sermon on the mount. After Jesus died, He visited the ancient people of the American continent. The records of this people we found engraven on gold plates in 1823 and translated through the power of God by a prophet. The record is called the Book of Mormon.
