Jesus saw the woman whose son’s body was being taken for burial. She was weeping over the death of her only son. As Jesus saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “weep not” (Luke 7:13). Jesus then went to the young man’s body and said, “Young man, I say unto thee, arise”. The man rose from the dead. The people in the funeral procession glorified God and said, “a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people” (Luke 7:16). We can only assume that the woman, whose husband and only son had died would have been left without any income or a household provider. This would have made the situation of the widow even more desperate. An important part of this story is the compassion Jesus showed for the widow. As we go through our lives, we should do our best to emulate the life of Jesus and try to relieve suffering and pain as much as possible – as He did.
