To liken the scriptures to the “sinners” that Jesus ate with, he drove home this very poignant point after relating the parable. He said, “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” In other words, if Jesus was able to bring the “sinners” He ate with to repentance, there would be a tremendous joy in heaven. However, if he had spent His time only eating with good people who didn’t need repentance, His time may not have been as well spent. Now, relating that to our lives, sometimes we judge others who look different from us, or we shun those who may be less than perfect in our eyes. Remember, if we can say a kind word or do a kind act that helps them to repent and return to God, the heavens will be overjoyed. We should try to help those in need as much as possible and pray for them.
